Masonry Department’s Field Work: Learning Hands-on Skills at the Construction Site
Greetings CoPS Community,
We are thrilled to share an exciting update from the Masonry Department at the Centre of Practical Skills (CoPS). Our dedicated team recently embarked on a fieldwork expedition to a construction site, immersing ourselves in practical learning experiences. Here’s a glimpse of the valuable skills our masonry trainees acquired during this enriching journey:
1. Soil Excavation:
Our trainees delved into the foundations of construction by mastering the art of soil excavation. Through hands-on practice, they gained a deeper understanding of the process and techniques involved in preparing the ground for construction projects.
2. Blinding of Soil with Concrete:
To enhance our knowledge of construction practices, they familiarized us with the process of blinding soil with concrete. This crucial step helps strengthen the foundation and create a solid base for further construction activities.
3. Measurement and Setting Out of Building:
Accurate measurement and setting out of a building lay the groundwork for successful construction. During the fieldwork, they honed our skills in precise measurement techniques and learned the intricacies of setting out a building according to architectural plans.
4. Bricklaying and Concreting:
Our trainees dived into the world of bricklaying and concreting, mastering the fundamental skills required to construct walls, pillars, and other structural elements. They practised the art of laying bricks and applying concrete to ensure sturdy and durable structures.
5. Reinforcement Placing:
Understanding the importance of reinforcement in structural integrity, they learned how to properly place reinforcement bars in concrete structures. This knowledge is essential for ensuring the strength and stability of buildings.
6. Concrete Filling of Hollow Blocks:
Hollow blocks play a significant role in construction projects. By learning the techniques of concrete filling for hollow blocks, they gained the expertise to create walls that are not only visually appealing but also structurally sound.
7. Timber and Wood Works:
Expanding their skillset, our trainees delved into timber and woodwork. They explored the properties of different wood types, learned proper cutting and shaping techniques, and developed an understanding of how to incorporate timber elements into construction projects.
At CoPS, we are committed to providing practical learning experiences that empower our students to become proficient in their chosen fields. Our recent onsite activity provided an invaluable opportunity for our Masonry Department to acquire essential skills directly from the construction site.
We appreciate our partner – Elite Bau for engaging the students in a practical learning exercise. Their unwavering support and guidance have been instrumental in shaping our students’ knowledge and expertise.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates from CoPS as we continue to provide practical education and equip our students with the skills needed for a successful career in the construction industry.
